Here lies the Data Protection Bill, 2021

After 4 years of deliberation, the Data Protection Bill, 2021 has been withdrawn by the Minister of Communications and Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw in the Lok Sabha today.

According to the “reasons for withdrawal” shared with other MPs, the Ministry is working on a comprehensive legal framework, after considering the report of the Joint Parliamentary Committee set up for the matter.

We are cautiously watching these developments & hope the Ministry will use this opportunity to address the numerous criticisms of the bill made by various stakeholders during the consultation process. Read our brief on the issues with the DPB, 2021
