We have written to the Election Commission of India, in line with our sustained efforts in this area, highlighting our concerns pertaining to Voter ID-Aadhaar linking (See here). We have requested that the voluntary nature of linking Aadhaar with voter ID, as identified and reiterated by the Commission, be conveyed, in letter and spirit, to all Booth Level Officers (See here for the notification). Our concern and request for clarity emerges from the fact that misconceptions about the nature of the exercise still exist, which has and may continue to lead to coercive linking (See here, here, and here). We have also requested the ECI to undertake awareness campaigns aimed at educating voters about the voluntary nature of the exercise.
